Sandy’s aftermath will certainly challenge the resources of the public and non-profit sectors, but, for what’s it’s worth, the philanthropic industry was well on the mend before the hurricane hit, despite the nation’s continued economic weakness. We’ve all heard the rumors about using predictive models with fundraising campaigns:  Raise your revenue by 300%!  Reactivate your whole lapsed file!  Reverse signs of aging by 30 years!  OK, that last one wasn’t related directly to fundraising, but it is just as unlikely. So what are predictive models and how do they work?  Let me try and break it down (in 500 words or less!).  Word of caution – this is designed for non-statisticians!

Last year, the Study of High Net Worth Women’s Philanthropy showed that women – individually and as part of a couple – accounted for billions of charitable dollars. The study also revealed that in nearly 90 percent of high net worth households, women are either the sole decision-maker or at least an equal partner in charitable decision-making.

According to a database kept by the nonprofit evaluator Charity Navigator, museum and zoo chief executive compensation has grown from an average of $192,000 in 2001 to $320,000 in 2011. Among the 53 institutions that list figures for both 2000 and 2010, pay ballooned from $249,000 to $368,000, a 50 percent increase. It mirrors the dramatic rise of CEO pay and bonuses in the corporate world and even at large non-profit organizations.
