Nearly a year ago to the day, Bill Gates and Warren Buffett paid a visit to India’s billionaires, asking them to consider taking a “giving pledge” and donating half their wealth to worthy causes before they die. While India’s philanthropists are still far away from meeting that challenge, a report on Indian philanthropy released on Wednesday at the third annual Indian Philanthropy Forum in Mumbai shows that Indian giving is clearly on the rise.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is neither synonymous with Corporate Philanthropy nor an alternative. In Corporate Philanthropy, corporates donate a certain portion of their profits to charitable causes. In this context, it is perceived as "improper" for corporates to consider receiving any benefit from it.

Entrepreneur and philanthropist Chuck Feeney recently made news when his foundation donated $350 million to Cornell University. The huge gift was made to clinch that institution's victory in Mayor Michael Bloomberg's competition to build a technology-incubating campus in New York City. Behind the scenes, what generated the Atlantic Philanthropies' donation was Mr. Feeney's refusal to fall into a trap that has snared many other philanthropists.

Until somewhat recently in the U.S., community foundations were pretty much the province of the wealthy. The same goes for the rest of institutional philanthropy - family foundations, donor-advised funds, etc. But something may be happening to community philanthropy in the U.S. and around the world that reflects the “mutuality of philanthropy,” the sense that “community philanthropy is for everyone,” according to Nick Deychakiwsky, senior program officer of the C.S. Mott Foundation.
