PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
Research Basics Bootcamp is one full day of instruction in the essentials of prospect research. This training is a must for those new to research or those who have had research added to their roles. No experience in the field is necessary to begin learning how to apply professional research methodologies. The day will cover such subjects as:
FACULTY:
Lisa Foster is the Director of Prospect Development at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, where she is also an alumna, past parent and current parent. Lisa is a former member of the Board of Directors of NEDRA. Over the course of her term, she served as the Treasurer of the Board of Directors, Conference Co-Chair for two NEDRA Conferences, Secretary of the Board, and Co-Chair of various committees. Lisa continues to serve on the NEDRA Programming and Nominating Committees. Lisa served as a Director of the Haverhill Foundation for Excellence in Education for over twenty years and has also served as a director of the Haverhill Discovery Club Program.
Dave Owens is a Principal Analyst at the Boston Children’s Hospital Trust, where he began his development career as a Prospect Researcher in 2001. Prior to his tenure at Boston Children’s Hospital, he worked in clinical administration at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in the departments of Pulmonary Care and Oncology. He received his M.A. degree in Political Science from Northeastern University, a B.A. degree in Philosophy and Public Policy from UMass/Boston, as well as an A.A. degree in Mathematics/Science from Cape Cod Community College. Dave has served on several NEDRA Committees, and has been a presenter at past NEDRA Conferences and Seminars in areas ranging from ADV filings to international research. He is currently a member of NEDRA’s Programming Committee.

The US Financial Services industry creates, maintains, and perpetuates a disproportionate number of personal fortunes. Its activities touch virtually every affluent major prospect on the donor and prospect lists of every nonprofit organization.
It can also present an intimidating challenge for prospect researchers stymied by artful industry jargon, organization and fee structures, and eye-popping deal figures. Still, the better researchers understand this world, the more opportunities they can bring to light for the organizations they serve.
This survey course examines investment managers in the “alternatives” subsector: private equity (“buyout” and venture capital) and hedge fund businesses and will feature:

Valerie Anastasio is Senior Director of Prospect Development at Boston Children’s Hospital Trust. Her development experience spans more than two decades, including positions at the Broad Institute, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Harvard University, Brandeis University, Boston Lyric Opera, WGBH, and as a consultant with The Helen Brown Group. She serves on the board of the BARKA Foundation, an international development organization addressing water resources and women’s empowerment issues in Burkina Faso and neighboring West African countries. She is a past board member of NEDRA and a recipient of NEDRA’s Ann Castle Award. She is a graduate of Williams College.

Parking
There is a covered, secured parking lot underneath the hotel. Self-parking and valet parking are available in this lot for an extra charge. Unfortunately, NEDRA cannot validate parking at the Conference.

Physicians have the potential to be good earners but their ability to give may be hindered by student loans and high costs of doing business. Physician compensation varies greatly based on a variety of factors: private practice versus a hospital system setting; geography; self-pay considerations; physician type; malpractice insurance; and higher education loans. Learn to estimate compensation quickly and segment physician prospects.
PRESENTER:
Gillian Sciacca (she/her, last name pronounced "shock-ahh") is a senior prospect management and research analyst at Williams College. She joined higher education in 2015 after serving as a Prospect Research Analyst at Mount Sinai Health System and the Wildlife Conservation Society in New York. Gillian serves on the Board of the Williamstown Community Chest.
